Dr. Ray Lauk is an Associate Professor of Management and Educational Leadership at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) where he teaches an undergraduate management class for non-business majors and graduate courses in educational leadership. He chairs doctoral committees and serves as a member of several other doctoral committees. Dr. Ray is a member of the EKU Faculty Senate and chairs the College of Education and Applied Human Sciences Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Dr. Ray maintains a full and active research agenda focussing on the impact of sexual orientation on school superintendent leadership, the impact of national political organizations on local school board elections, and research on storytelling and its ability to change lives from both the storyteller and audience perspectives.

Dr. Ray is the founder, curator, and host of Talking Out of School: Stories that celebrate teaching, learning, and growing. Talking Out of School is the monthly storytelling event featuring students, faculty, and community members from the EKU community.

Dr. Ray has been a school district superintendent for most of 1993-2014 serving children in large high-poverty suburban Chicago school districts with significant second language populations, small rural downstate Illinois districts, and an overseas international school in Brazil.  Lauk also has a brief experience as an interim administrator in a charter school in the Chicago Public Schools.  Lauk has consistently raised student achievement and closed the achievement gap by focusing attention and resources to the improvement of instruction.  An expert in school finance, Lauk has been an adjunct school finance professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Concordia University Chicago from 2010-2019.  He retired from the Maywood-Melrose Park-Broadview School District 89 in Melrose Park, IL as its School District Business Manager in 2019.

1st time I really paid attention to the speaker…Great job!!!
— Attendee, Michigan Association of Student Financial Services Administrators

Dr. Ray’s background also includes experiences as a speaker on school and organizational culture, school security, and securing community support for district initiatives.  As the author of FUEL for Learning, Lauk has spoken to state school boards associations and school districts about creating school cultures that are focused on raising student achievement and creating positive, healthy employee workplaces.  GE Security (a General Electric Company) tapped Lauk’s experience in school leadership when he was the GE Education Solutions Manager from 2006-2009.  Lauk worked with large school district leaders across the United States to raise student achievement by ensuring safe and secure learning environments.

Dr. Ray transitioned from school leadership to being an entrepreneur.  In 2014, he created Dr. Ray’s Toffee, LLC, a gourmet toffee candy business that was built on his 36 years of toffeemaking.  His toffee was available at gourmet stores and Mariano’s stores in the Chicago area and online at www.drraystoffee.com. Since starting at EKU, Dr. Ray has put the toffee business on “pause”—but you never know when he may come out of toffee retirement!

I couldn’t have asked for someone more eager to prepare an unforgettable keynote. Dr. Lauk surpassed our expectations and delivered an exceptional keynote address to our attendees.
